Diverse identity is one of the main things that Bt+ stands up for, but what is it?
What is Identity?
Someone's identity is a collection of traits they associate with themselves. These traits usually are related to biological or mental aspects of someone's existence, such as their sex or gender, age, body, race, or anything else. Someone's identity does not always match who they "physically are". For example, someone Assigned Male At Birth can identify as female. It's also important to note that someone's identity doesn't always match how they present themselves. For instance, someone who identifies as female might wear clothes typically associated with masculinity. Never make assumptions about anyone's identity.
What can Beings Identify As?
Anything can impact someone's identity. It's impossible to list every factor, but usually identity is influenced by gender, age, race, disability, species, and other physical traits such as eye color, and mental traits such as neurodivergence. Beings can identify as another gender, or non-binary, chronological adults can identify as children and vice versa, someone born one race can identify as another, someone can identify as a fictional species, the list goes on. If you feel like something about your existence is "off", then you may find that your internal sense of identity is different.
How can Beings Present Identity?
Identity presentation is very different from your actual identity. The way you present isn't about how you feel inside, but how you want to express yourself. Someone who identifies as female can wear masculine clothes and use "he/him" pronouns, this is valid. Someone who identifies as male can wear feminine clothes, this is also valid. Sometimes identity and presentation do match. Beings who identify as animals will often wear accessories such as tails to closer match their identity, and beings who identify as a different age may wear clothes associated with their internal age. Anyone can present however they'd like, and it's no one's decision what you do with your body.
